Grace and Courtesy

Many things about Montessori classrooms set them apart from a traditional education system. Walking into a Montessori classroom, you will undoubtedly notice the carefully prepared environment with child-size furniture and perfectly organized shelves, or the buzz of the children moving throughout the classroom working independently. What may not be so obvious is the pivotal part of the curriculum that is the basis of all things Montessori; Grace and Courtesy.

So what is Grace and Courtesy?
Grace and Courtesy is the foundation of which the classroom flows throughout all parts of the day. Grace and Courtesy lessons are given continuously throughout the day as opportunities arise. Grace is the child's ability to show self-regulation, comfort, and respect for themselves, and courtesy is then being able to identify and show that same grace and respect for others.

"Peace is what every human being is craving for, and it can be brought about by humanity through the child."
- Dr. Maria Montessori Education and Peace, 1949.

Turkey Creek Montessori is dedicated to cultivating inclusive, respectful environments where all children and families feel welcome. Our peace curriculum emphasizes values of peace, justice, diversity, and inclusion. We strive each day to better our curriculum to contribute to a world that will no longer see biases, race inequality, or injustice.

ABAR

ABAR stands for anti-bias anti-racism. Although we strive each day to teach our children inclusion and equality, the conversation must continue at home. In order to make a difference, we must bridge the gap between school and home. Here are some resources to help guide conversations and learning for the whole family.
